Thanks for stopping by.

I’m glad you’re here.

#Storyteller

I collect and tell stories about Juneteenth to preserve and share my history. I hope others will find themselves in history, keep what is celebratory, and release what is not.

Wishing you peace, love, happiness, and freedom on your journey…

-Candace

Born Candace Thomas, I am a sixth-generation Texan and former Miss Juneteenth.

My family has been on Galveston Island, the birthplace of Juneteenth, for 180 years, and I am one of our family’s griots.

Griot - A West African term for a member of a class of traveling of poets, musicians, and storytellers who maintain a tradition of oral history.

Education

I studied English Literature and African American Studies at some of the best universities in Texas.

  • University of Houston, B.A.

  • Texas Southern University, M.A.

  • Southern Methodist University, DLS.

Currently, I am researching generational storytelling and perceptions of freedom in America. I am completing a book entitled Juneteenth Pilgrimage.

I host a seminar entitled Freedom16, where we study paths to unity and love during the “Season of Freedom” between June 19th - July 4th.

Awards and Publications

I’ve helped thousands of students over the last 23 years. Regardless of the subject, I teach the whole student.

  • Southern Methodist University DLS Fellowship (2020-2023)

  • NISOD International Teaching Award (2018)

  • Mythology and Belief: A Humanities Reader (2014)

  • Ignite: A 10-Day Journey to Purpose-Driven Power (2012)

  • Thurgood Marshall Fellow for Positive Psychology (2006)

I started the Juneteenth Pilgrimage in 2022 to collect our family’s Juneteenth stories and to commemorate my ancestors’ vision of freedom conceptualized in the American Dream.

With the help of technology and the benefit of my education, I am continuing the work my grandfather started almost 50 years ago.

Let’s explore your story.

I will take you on a virtual freedom tour to learn more about our shared opportunity to champion freedom and justice for all.

It’s time.
